Hi-q manual
This should be your only choice in mobile HF antenna and you will never need to buy another. Thank you and have a wonderful day. See you on the radio when I mobile-ing down the road. This is my second HIQ masterpiece from Charlie having previously used a When my new Pirahna R arrived i was so impressed with the packing which was so carefully done,Thanks Charlie. When i pulled the antenna out of its shipping tube i was absolutely gob smacked with the quality and precision of machining and assembly.
This is a military spec serious piece of hardware which simply oozes quality! I had a strong bracket made up for my tow bar and the GQD made installation seemless. The shunt coil was assembled and installed as described on the HIQ website and the EB-6 cap hat was a sight to behold at the top of the antenna! Only 6. Once again this new series of mobile antenna has solved all the problems of Don Johnstons original screwdriver design. There is nothing on the market that can touch the Pirahna HIQ series in quality, build, design Not a copy but an original design , and most of all performance.
Why buy a contraption when you can have the best for less than the price of other poorly copied Don J knock-offs! Thanks Charlie i am glad the US Army use these antennas in battle as nothing else would stand up when needed! The value for money in the Pirahna series defies belief.
Telephone support from Charlie was world class when ordering and it was 5 days from California to Canberra! I am simply Gob Smacked Charlie! This is my third antenna from Charlie! Look at the reviews. Did you notice everyone refers to HI-Q as "Charlie"? That is because Charlie is the president, csr rep, chief engineer and phone answering guy!
If you call HI-Q, Charlie answers the phone and stays with you until your problem is solved. I have two 's and just added a 6-RS Piranha to the collection. It costs twice as much as the competition, however if you pay half price for a pair of pants that don't fit, did you really get a good deal. It's not fair to compare the 6 series to any screwdriver on the market. It is like comparing a Bugatti Veron to a Yugo.
I use it as a base antenna in my HOA restricted home. It handles full legal limit without breaking a sweat. Can you run that much power through a "cheap screwdriver"? Performance is phenomenal. Take a minute to look at the reviews and give Charlie a call. You will be impressed.
Paul W8JN. I've never written any kind of review, but I'm so strongly impressed by Hi-Q that I felt I should make an exception. I connected the antenna to the radio and talked to the England on mhz! It was that simple. No shunts or finicky tuning, it just works. More importantly, the service from Hi-Q's owner has been simply outstanding.
When I first received my antenna, I did something really, really, stupid. I took it apart and killed it! Don't ask why. The owner of Hi-Q was not only very nice about the situation, he rebuilt my antenna in a single day subtracting the shipping time.
Throughout my lapse of sanity, I felt I was in very good hands. Long before ordering the Hi-Q, I researched and carefully considered top-of-the-line antennas. I suspect Eham readers can easily guess which brands I looked at. Other antennas demonstrated similar on-air performance but IMHO: Hi-Q's more advanced design provides benefits that I find really useful and in one instance critical: 1: Lightweight and compact! The Hi-Q only weighs 8. This is critical for our family, since we use the covered truck bed as a big trunk for tools and gear.
A large screwdriver installed in the bed would have stolen space and made it impossible to use the cover. Mounting on the bumper or hitch would have degraded performance. I didn't like those compromises. I mounted the Hi-Q in the rear stakeholder pocket driver's side using a Breedlove mount -- exactly where my Tarheel Jr. This places the Hi-Q nice and high; with the coil above the cab. It's no taller than the Tarheel and the larger coil is up in the air where it's no hindrance at all.
Constant height! My overall antenna height with a 4 ft. This is a real blessing since there are many railroad underpasses in my area. Also the Hi-Q doesn't change height like a screwdriver antenna, so I don't have to worry about hitting an underpass because I made a band change! I like that the Hi-Q antenna is sealed against the weather. Condensation would appear in my previous screwdriver antennas and while that didn't seem to do any harm; it did show that whatever's in the atmosphere can also get inside the antenna.

He will make suggestions based upon his experience and knowledge of this rock solid, incredible performing antenna. I run several different configurations of cap hats, whips and combinations there of.
I keep a excel spread sheet of my turn counts and pF on the feed point for the lower bands. It's always right on and I can work anyone I can hear on the band. I get compliments on the signal strength and quality often. You get what you pay for with a Hi Q in many aspects. I wont own anything but a Hi Q.
Thanks for building a far superior product Charlie. I have had my baby the 5" coil from HI-Q for about 2 years now and what an awesome piece of equipment. I have worked over countries from the mobile along with a watt amplifier. I use this antenna in the most extreme conditions you could imagine, degree weather its the same in C or F for those of you that don't know.
I drive up to kms in a day but average around 3 to kms. Well to say the least I absolutely abuse my antennas. I also have the 4" coil which is an awesome backup. I recently had a problem with my 5" which was all my fault and I sent it away to Charlie and he repared it the same day it arrived and sent it out the next day. I can't say enough good about the quaulity and service at HI-Q. When you compare apples to apples spend the money and buy the HI-Q or you will be comparing apples to lemons..
NUFF SAID I wasted alot of money in the last 5 years on junk antennas and if they physically change size they are probably gonna fail like most screwdrivers. Please let me save you alot of money and don't buy the products that have no custumer service, like the high sierra people.
I bought their top of the line and sold it on ebay for less than half of what I paid for it, 2 months later, never worked and could get no help from them. I pulled the motor out and it was locked up, I emailed Charlie on Sunday and told him I was leaving on Thursday and I was in need of a motor, he emailed me right back and said he would get one out on Monday, he expressed one to me today at no charge.
This guy is supper to work with and has a pretty good antenna too. Thanks Charlie,. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. Hi Q does not support third party controllers. The signal reports I receive from this antenna are fantastic! I used the same combination as described above. I spent two months trying to get this to work and never really achieved satisfactory results.
In addition, I use a shunt coil to match the antenna. This combination seems to give me great performance. I have it mounted in a 4' mast attached to a chain link fence. Since I am directly on salt water here in Florida, the ground is excellent.
In fact, I have decided not to even install the control wires for the antenna coil. SWR is 1. I am using a tuner at the radio. Again the receive and transmit performance is truly amazing when compared with my other antennas. One other point, when I called Charlie and explained what I was trying to do, he was very helpful in explaining the many options in selecting the right antenna.
Get a HI-Q and you will never look at another vertical. I decided to use the whip from the Little Tarheel II. I also used the motor cable from the Little Tarheel II as well; they might as well be good for something : I control the antenna via the Turbo Tuner and it performs flawlessly.
